Our History

David Crockett Elementary School, located in Phoenix, Arizona, is part of the Balsz School District, which has a rich history dating back to 1857. While early records are sparse, Balsz School officially opened on October 29, 1888, thanks to the efforts of Luz Redondo Balsz, who gathered eleven children to start the first class. Over the years, the district expanded to accommodate growing student numbers, evolving from a one-room schoolhouse to modern facilities.

Crockett Elementary was constructed in 1955 at 501 North 36th Street, relieving the overcrowding at Balsz School. It started as a new facility with 14 classrooms, a home economics room, and a library. Over time, Balsz District continued to grow, adding schools like Brunson-Lee in 2003.

Today, Crockett Elementary, like other schools in the district, serves grades K-5, continuing a long tradition of commitment to student education and community growth.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Welcome to Crockett School!

We are excited to welcome you and your children to become a part of Crockett’s proud tradition of providing interactive, rigorous, and diverse learning opportunities.

As I begin my twelfth year as principal of David Crockett School and my thirty-third year in education, I remain energized and deeply committed to making a positive difference in the lives of our students. By fostering a strong school culture, maintaining high standards for teaching and learning, increasing academic expectations for all students, and actively engaging our community, our goal at Crockett is to ensure that every student is prepared to succeed in whatever path they choose. We will accomplish this by setting high expectations and providing the systems and support necessary for all students to meet them.

Crockett offers a wide range of academic and enrichment opportunities, including rigorous classroom instruction, tutoring, Skate After School, Playworks, STEM Club, and many additional programs that continue to grow each year. These experiences are designed to help our Crockett Bears build the skills and confidence they need to thrive. In addition, we continue to expand our use of technology, and students have opportunities to participate in after-school tutoring, sports, and programs such as the Balsz Boys and Girls Club.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to embracing the challenges of the future while honoring the traditions that make Crockett such a special place. Our dedicated staff, supportive families, and hardworking students come together to create a school community that is both unique and exceptional.

We encourage you to explore our website to learn more about our curriculum, programs, and the daily experiences that make Crockett School a great place to learn and grow.

I look forward to partnering with you and your student to make this an academically successful and rewarding school year.

Sincerely,
Sean M. Hannafin
Principal, Crockett School
